The Stokke family has a remarkable history with Janus. In connection with Janus' 130th anniversary, we spoke with Siv Stokke (fourth generation Janus in the family) – someone who knows the Janus brand better than most...
You and your family have an incredible history with Janus... Can you describe it in a short timeline?
My family has worked for Janus for a total of 253 years!
Ten family members have worked for Janus – Sofie (my great-grandmother), Olav (my grandfather), Borgny (my grandmother), Gudrun (my mother), Siv (me), Saritha (my daughter), Susann (my other daughter) and Stian (my son). The connection to Janus started when my grandfather Olav bought a piece of land in Espeland and built a house back in 1937. It was (and still is) right next to the factory. The place is called Skogly and the land cost around 800 kroner; this is the house I live in today!

And what about your own personal story with Janus?
I was only 17 years old when I got my first job in the sewing department. Back then, it was really hard to make money because we were paid based on how much we sewed! It was also quite dusty to work there, and it didn’t help that I was allergic to dust! I got sick quite often, and my doctor told me to find another job. After 18 months, I quit.
Two years later, I was back at Janus – this time in the warehouse. I loved working there because no two days were the same. When I returned for the third time, I was a mother of three children. This time, I think it’s for good! This August marks 21 years since I came back for the third time. As we say, ‘third time’s a charm.’ 😊 During this period, I have worked in the sales department, managed our factory outlet, and eventually took a new job in the warehouse.
I really enjoyed working in the warehouse, so when Katrin asked if I wanted to work with her in customer service, I said NO! But somehow, she managed to convince me that this was also a great job – and she was right.
You could say that I have worked in almost every corner of Janus during my time here! ❤
«What makes Janus unique? Without a doubt our quality and the fact that we produce in Norway…»
Why do you think your family has such a strong connection to Janus?
I think it’s because it has always been a safe and inclusive workplace. This is reflected in the high average age among employees. We come – and we stay! ❤
How proud are you to work for the company?
I am very proud to work at Janus! When you wake up every morning knowing that someone depends on what you do, it gives a good feeling. I have wonderful colleagues who make me smile and make me happy.
What do you think makes Janus special?

Janus has been a brand for everyone over the years. Our clothes are knitted with very high quality and last for many years. Janus has a very good reputation among people in Norway.
Since you started, how have you seen Janus change, and how do you view the future?
I have seen many changes – some good, some less good – and right now the future is a bit ‘unclear’ for me. The higher prices and focus on sports fashion in the high-end market are something completely new for Janus, but I am optimistic and believe it can open up new and exciting opportunities!
What do you think makes Janus unique, and what is it like working there today?
Janus is an inclusive workplace where departments take care of each other. Not everyone is necessarily best friends, but we get along well, and there is a good atmosphere. 😊 The employees at Janus are also willing to help with other tasks outside their position. If necessary, we gladly help in the warehouse, in the store, in the online shop, etc.
What makes us unique? Without a doubt, our quality and the fact that we produce in Norway.

How long do you think your family will be connected to the brand in the future?
My children are grown and work elsewhere now, so I think this wonderful story might end with me. But maybe there’s a small chance it will continue if I’m lucky enough to have grandchildren…

What do you do in your free time?
When I’m not at work, I train my dogs and go hiking in the mountains. I am a breeder of German Shepherds and currently have four at home.
Gucci (14 weeks), Fancy Fate (22 months), Chilly (7 years old and their mother), Unique (almost 13 years old and the grandmother ❤).
Finally – what do you think is so magical about wool?
It keeps you warm, even when you get wet!
